Project name: That dream!

Client: Geodesic.Life

Role: everything

Client's Problem: how to visually show the advantages of dome houses and connect with the target audience?

Software: Illustrator, Photoshop, AfterEffecs

I was thrilled to get this project… but a bit confused in the beginning as well.

I knew nearly nothing about vector illustration and 2d animation when Eugene contacted me and asked to create some nice small animations, showcasing the advantages of living in dome houses. At that time I was just finishing my first year of studies in Hyper Island, learning principles of animation, storytelling, 2d, 3d…

After discussing the brief several times I still was not sure why would Eugene ask me to visualize something that their architect could do in 3d. I did several illustrations for the event for them and was still searching for an answer. How can I show natural indoor illumination in a better way than the specialized software for that? How can I possibly compete with it? And why complicate things?

And then it hit me. I cannot compete with it, so I need to do something completely different. Not just small animations, but to build a whole story about dome houses. To create an emotional connection with the target audience using storytelling and create a 2D promo video which can be used for both: attracting actual customers and investors.

So I managed to convince Geodesic.Life team that this option would be more beneficial for them. Worked on several options, and after communicating with the customer we landed on the idea of conveying a story in first person from a house’s point of view. Did a quick storyboard, then put it together in storymatic. After treatment was locked I went into Illustrator and started working on visual expression.

I was still quite new to the software, so I decided to go for a simple yet appealing style. I chose two color palettes: a darker one for the first part, and a brighter one for the second, after transformation, to show the mood change and emphasize how much better it is to live in a dome house.

I worked on the project and learned software. It was challenging, but rewarding at the same time, especially seeing the customer’s happy reaction and hearing feedback that the video caught lots of attention at the offline event and brought potential investors and partners.

As a bonus, I created a simple logo for them and GIFs from the video.

If I did this project once again I would probably spend more time on illustrations, and use some texturing and gradients.
