Project name: The Walk
The final project for Hyper Island + Geodesic.Life
Role: all
Theme: Climate change
Software: Cinema4d, AfterEffects, PremierePro
I was always fascinated by Eastern culture. When I heard about the brief, I instantly thought about the way they perceive nature as something extremely valuable, and divine, as opposed to our Western world, where it is just something there, existing, like a background.
And so in my film, I wanted to show the difference between the cityscape and the natural environment and the way it influences us and our health, both physical and mental.
I was inspired by Miadzaki’s pieces, where there were beautiful natural scenes with natural sounds, immersing you into the picture, without distracting music. I wanted to recreate something like that in 3D, create the feeling of peace and harmony, and just capture a moment in nature, as opposed to the rush and stress of the city.
It is a first-person view, which means that you, as an audience, are the main character here.
Also, this piece has a hidden promotion of Geodesic.Life - a company that builds sustainable and comfortable dome houses and inspires life in nature.
The piece was presented in Karlskrona cinema and later at a motion film festival in Malmo on 24.05.24.
Beginning.
What is the climate change for me? How do I relate and show it in a non-trivial way? Everything starts and ends with nature. In this short film, I want to show how important nature is for our physical and mental health. How just simply seeing it balances us, and thus it is important to take good care of it - and of the planet in general.
From a busy city to chill nature. From feeling small and unimportant - to being in harmony with yourself and the world around. The story is from the first person, meaning that the viewer is the main character, which makes it more immersive and relatable. It starts in a big lonely city and finishes in the countryside, surrounded by a loving family.
After working on the treatment for 3 weeks I have figured out the story, style, and pacing. Making a simple animatic helped to understand my ideas better and visualize what needed to be done.
I will be gradually sharing the process, some work-in-progress style frames and animations here. The premiere will be on 18.04 in the Karlskrona cinema.
City scene
I have used free Cargo assets for the houses in the scene. After figuring out blocking and initial camera movement, I went into details, adjusting materials, light, and effects to create the atmosphere of an evening city, a mix of modern and dystopian elements.
Nature scenes
After dominating city we transition into peace. Beauty. Balance. I am going to have several natural scenes, inspired by Studio Ghibli, but in 3D. Slow, calm and relaxing, surrounded by natural sounds.
